Nawawi: Mutashabih Ayat Cannot be Taken Literally, But Need Ta’weel

Bismillah, praise be to Allah the creator that has no beginning and no end, and does not resemble the creations and does not need any of the creations, we ask Allah to raise the rank of Prophet Muhammad and his kind Aal and companions, Thereafter

Know that in al-Qur’an there are Muhkam and Mutashabih Ayat, the Mutshabih (1) verses are those that pertain more then one meaning and so they cannot be taken literal as quoted below by Imam Nawawiy who said that al-Qadi ^iad al-Maliky said:

“There’s no disagreement amongst the Muslim Scholars of Hadith and Aqeedah and their followers that the apparent meaning from the Mutashabih ayat about Allah cannot be taken literall such as the saying of Allah in Ayah 16 of Suratul-Mulk [A’amintum man fis-sama’] أأمنتم من في السماء and such verses, are not taken literally (on its “Dhahir” meaning) rather it’s interpreted with “Ta’weel” according to all of the scholars”. Imam nawawiy mentioned this in his explanation of Sahih Muslim V5, page22.

Similarly Imam al-Qurtubiy said that this ayah is not taken literally (that Allah dwells int he sky), rather it’s talking about the angels, and it was said it is Jibril who is assigned to bring punishment:

قال الامام القرطبي(671): في تفسيره في قول الله تعالى : ” أأمنتم من في السماء ” : قيل هو إشارة إلى الملائكة, وقيل الى جبريل الموكل بالعذاب. قلت : ويحتمل أن يكون المعنى : خالق من في السماء ان يخسف بكم الارض كما خسفها بقارون.اه كتاب تفسير القرطبي المجلد 9 الجزء 18 صحيفة 141.

Imam ar-Raziy in his tafseer v15, juz’30, page 61 further explained that this ” أأمنتم من في السماء”  Ayah 16 of Suratul-Mulk [A’amintum man fis-sama’] cannot be taken literally as agreed upon this by all the scholars, because the sky is created and it’s impossible for the creator to be occupied in a space or place:

Therefore, Ayah 16 of Suratul-Mulk [A’amintum man fis-sama’i ayyakhsifa bikumul-ard] أأمنتم من في السماء أن يخسف بكم الأرض

Means, “Do you feel secure that the angels in the sky will not shake the earth from under you and get you swallowed in a landslide, upon the order of Allah?” The interpreter of the Qur’an, Al-Fakhr Ar-Raziyy, in his explanation, and Abu Hayan Al-Andalusiyy, in his book Al-Bahr Al-Muhit, both stated that the term ‘man fis-sama’i’ refers to ‘the angels in the sky’ and it does not mean that Allah dwells in the sky.

(1) The Muhkamat ayat and Mutashabihat ayat

The Muhkam Ayah: A verse that has one clear meaning. Like {Laysa Kamithlihi Shay’}

The Mutashabih Ayah: A verse that can have many meanings. Like: {Allahu Nurus-Samawati wal-‘Ard}

Note:

قالت السيدة عائشة رضي الله عنها: “قال رسـول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: إذا رأيتم الذين يتّبعون ما تشابه منه (الآيات المتشابهة) فأولئك الذين سماهم الله (في قلوبهم زيغ) فاحذروهم”. رواه البخاري

Lady ^Aishah said that the Prophet Sallallahu ^Alayhi wa Sallam said: “If you find the people who follow the mutashabih from the qur’an, then those whom Allah said about them {there’s misguidance (Zaygh) in their hearts}, so be warned from them” Narrated by al-Bukhariy.

So taking Mutashabih verses in al-Qur’an literally contradicts the Qur’an itself and the hadith, and so it leads to Tashbeeh and Tajseem. (Mushabbihah, those who liken Allah to his creations, Mujassimah, those who attribute the body and bodily parts to Allah).

Imam Aliy also said:

عن علي رضي الله عنه قال: سيرجع قوم من هذه الأمة عند اقتراب الساعة كفارا قال رجل:يا أمير المؤمنين كفرهم بماذا أبالاحداث أم بالانكار فقال:بل بالانكار ينكرون خالقهم فيصفونه بالجسم و الأعضاء

في كتاب نجم المهتدي لابن المعلم القرشي ص 588

When means: “Some people from this ummah will revert to blasphemy near the time of the day of judgment, a man said: Is it because of innovations or denial? He said: Denial (of Allah or His attributes), they deny the Attributes of their creator and attribute to him with the body and organs(bodily parts)”.

We ask Allah to keep us on the creed that Allah is clear from resembling the creations, and that Allah exists without a body or place.

Allah knows best.
